Blue Devils Ground the Hawks
For their entire playoff run, the men's soccer team have been playing with their backs to the wall after receiving the #18th seed in the 2024 3C2A Nor-Cal playoffs. On paper they would be the underdog, forced to play on their opponent's home pitch. Taking the field without key players due to injuries, they were still able to defeat #16 Delta and knock out #1 Evergreen Valley. But in the 3rd round of the playoffs, it all might have been to be too much to overcome. When that final whistle was sounded, the scoreboard read 3-1 and it was the 7th seeded Blue Devils of Merced College that would be moving on to the next round.
The Blue Devils got on the board first, scoring just 4th minute into the match, when Angle Sanchez was able to place the ball neatly into the back corner, leaving Hawks keeper Jase Brede with no chance of making a play on the ball. After the goal, both teams quickly settle in defensively for the rest of the half as neither team was able to create any threats that might lead to a scoring chance. So, at the half the score stayed 1-0.
The second half started just like the first half, but this time it was the Hawks that came out strong, quickly scoring the equalizing goal in the 50th minute. Arteen Arianmanesh dished the ball to Frank Hinostroza who worked his way past two defenders before barring the ball into the top left side of the goal. With momentum on their side, the Hawks jumped into overdrive, looking to get the go-ahead goal. Corner after corner and shot after shot just missed their intended targets. Then it was Merced who was quickly countered, able to create scoring chance with cross that was deflected in by Diego Solorio in the 60th minute.
The Hawks knowing they needed answer back with time running out, began their last push for that elusive goal. Taking more chances, looking for the long ball, bringing up the back end, they gave it their all, trying everything they could. But in the 80th minute the Blue Devils put an end to any comeback hopes, as they scored their third goal, ensuring that they would be moving on into the next round.
Disappointed, the Hawks can look back at the great season they just finished with pride and begin to look ahead towards next season with goals of advancing even further into the post season.
