Hawks Take Down The #1 Seed
The 17th seeded Las Positas men's soccer team, on the road under the bright lights of Evergreen Valley College, pulled off the biggest surprise of the 3C2A playoffs by defeating #1 seeded Hawks in a 2nd round match up Saturday night.
The underdog Hawks had one question on their minds as they prepared for Evergreen Valley, would they be able to finish this time. Just 44 days earlier at home in The Nest, Las Positas went into half time with a 2-1 lead. But it was the Evergreen Valley Hawks, who scored 3 goals in the second half, that left with the win. However on this day it would be different, as the now visiting Hawks had all the right answers. Playing a complete match and behind a 2-goal performance from Frank Hinostroza, Las Positas came away with a bracket busting 2-0 win.
Hinostroza scored his first goal off a Cooper Kennedy assists in the 15th minute. The match itself was a physical one, with neither team backing down. A total eight cards were handed out, three yellows to the visiting Hawks, and 4 yellows and a red to the host Hawks. The outcome of the match was very much in doubt until the 75th minute, when Hinostroza score an unassisted that all but put the Hawks into the 3rd round. It was Jase Brede in goal for Las Positas, who picked up his second straight shutout.
Up next for the Hawks is a Tuesday showdown with 7th seeded Merced, who earlier in the day defeated West Valley 4-3 in penalty kicks after their match ended 0-0. This will once again be a rematch of a game played in the regular season. The two teams played to a 1-1 draw back at The Nest on September 27th. It was the Blue Devils who scored first in the 65th minute before Trey Lassiter scored the equalizing goal in the 85th. Tuesday's match will take place at U.C. Merced College with kickoff scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Tickets for general admission will be $12, while students, faculty, staff, senior citizens aged 60 & over and children less than 12 years of age get in for $8.
