Nor-Cal and Coast Conference Champ
Titles and tickets, that's what was on the line this past Saturday on the campus of Santa Rosa Junior College. The top 8 divers in the 1-meter and 3-meter boards would earn their ticket to the State Finals. The 3C2A Nor-Cal Diving Championship and Coast Conference titles we also there for the taking.
And take is exactly what Hawk freshman diver Ainsley Wade did. She finished the meet as The Nor-Cal Champion and Coast Conference Champion in both the 1M and 3M events.
Wade started the day winning the 1M competition with a score of 216.65 defeating the second-place finisher Maria Chase from Santa Rosa by 1.30 points and teammate Sarah Dorn by 3.30 points. The trio spent the six rounds of the competition exchanges positions on top of the leader board until the final round of dives.
It was a bit of a different story in the 3M event. Wade dominated the event finishing with a score of 214.05, 17.30 better than 2nd place. Second place came down to the last dive as College of Marin's Olivia Svuba and Dorn battled it out. By only 1.85 points, it was the diver from Marin who finished 2nd as Dorn won her second 3rd place finish of the day.
When asked about her expectations going into the day Wade said "I expected to qualify but not win. I was super surprised to win the 1-meter and if felt amazing. In the 3M, I thought that I might win and then I did. Honestly, it's one of the best feelings."
With her two 3rd place finishes, Dorn is now a 2-time State Final Qualifier after punching her tickets to the big show. At the Nor-Cal Finals a year ago, she finished 2nd in both events.
In the Coast Conference competition, which is decided by the results of the Nor-Cal Finals, the Hawks had a very strong showing by all five divers. Yes, they sent five, more on that in a bit.
Wade of course claimed the titles in both the 1M and 3M. Dorn finished second in the 1M and 3rd in the 3M as the College of Marin competes in the Coast Conference for the swim and dive season.
Annie Holm finished 4th in the 1M with a score of 155.55 and earned 147.90 points and a 5th place finish in the 3M.
Scoring valuable points by way of 7th place was Ashley May and her score of 121.70 in the 1M.
Wait was that Vandersall's music? Yes, yes it was. Coming out of the pool and onto the deck for the 1M was Vinny Vandersall. Shaking off any rust that might have developed Vandersall scored 104.85 points and finished in 4th place in the men's competition.
Points earned from the diving results will be combined to the team totals earned from Coast Conference swimming finals, which takes place over three days at the College of San Mateo starting this Thursday. The 3C2A State Championships runs from May 2-4 and will be back at Santa Rosa Junior College.
