Sand shines for Las Positas in state swim

Las Positas College freshman Ashley Sand, a Castro Valley High graduate, had an impressive pair of top-five finishes at the CCCAA State Swimming and Diving Championships this past week at East Los Angeles College.
Las Positas College freshman Ashley Sand, a Castro Valley High graduate, had an impressive pair of top-five finishes at the CCCAA State Swimming and Diving Championships this past week at East Los Angeles College.
Sand finished third in the women's 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2 minutes, 29.06 seconds, in a fast race won by Rylee Beidleman of Modesto Junior College, in 2:21.99, which was recognized as the Women's Performance of the Meet. Sand was also fifth in the 100 breaststroke, in 1:08.19.
The Las Positas women's team, runner-up in the Coast Conference Championships at Las Positas, finished 16th in the State team standings with 113 points; and the Las Positas men, who also finished second in the Coast meet, were 17th with 54 points down south.
In other Las Positas highlights, freshman Samantha Dorn was fourth in the women's 1,650 freestyle (18:45.85) and eighth in the 500 freestyle (5:34.12). Sophomore Kendalyn Cox was 10th in the 200 freestyle (2:04.81). The Hawks' women's 200 freestyle relay of Cox, Gabrielle Benavidez, Sarah Thompson and Sand finished 10th in 1:44.15.
Zach Perry had a strong 200 breaststroke effort, finishing 13th overall after setting a personal best in the prelims. He also had a great split in the 800 freestyle relay, as Las Positas finished 10th.
