Overcoming

by Matt Schwab

The unbeaten Las Positas men's basketball team had to overcome more than just opponents last week.

The high-flying Hawks, ranked No. 1 in the state, overcame a number of illnesses in two convincing victories in the tough Coast North Conference, beating Ohlone 85-63 on the road and De Anza 109-68 at The Nest.
Las Positas improved to 20-0 overall and 6-0 in conference. They're 11-0 at home.

But the big tests will keep coming — the Hawks host No. 17 Skyline (16-4, 4-2) at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 29; travel to College of San Mateo on Friday, Jan. 31; and then comes a blockbuster game against No. 2 City College of San Francisco (19-1, 5-1) on Feb. 5 at The Nest.

Hawks head coach James Giacomazzi loves his team's resilience.

"Really happy with the guys' performances last week," Giacomazzi said on Monday. "At Ohlone we had a lot of guys missing due to illness and the kids dug deep and persevered on the road. And then we had a couple guys play through, not feeling great and not practicing that much, in a home win versus De Anza, where they left it all on the floor."
Giacomazzi is hoping for better news on the health front this week.

"I'm proud of the team. We'll see what we have today at practice and get ready for another tough week in the Coast-North," the coach said.
Against Ohlone, a bunch of Hawks stepped up. Sterling McClanahan and Jorren Edmonds led the way with double-doubles. McClanahan had 22 points and 10 rebounds.
Edmonds had 21 points and 10 rebounds, 5 assists and four steals.Elijah Mobley delivered 18 points, two rebounds and four assists. Inside presence Mecca Okereke had five points and 10 boards.
Against De Anza, the offense let loose. McClanahan poured in 26 points, three rebounds and two assists. Jaden Woodard filled the stat sheet with 21 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and four steals.
Versatile Elijah Mobley had a double-double with 20 points, 10 assists and six rebounds. Edmonds added 16 points, seven rebounds, and four assists.
Okereke also had a double-double with 12 points, 10 rebounds, three blocks and three steals.
