Hawks Soccer makes strong opening statement

By Matt Schwab

The Las Positas College men's and women's soccer teams have lots of newcomers and positive vibes early this season.

The women's squad has a whopping 16 new players and seven returning starters. The men have just three returning starters.

Well, youth was served on opening day of the 2022 season — with the Las Positas men crushing Marin 5-0 and the Hawks' women winning by forfeit, both on Friday, Aug. 26.

Here's an early season look at both Las Positas teams …

MEN'S SOCCER
The Hawks (1-0) boast three captains in midfielder Christian Neves, forward Griffin LaFleur and center back Dean Abdrabboh. Griffin's older brother Grant LaFleur, a center midfielder, is another key threat.

"Those four guys play in the spine of our team," head coach Andy Cumbo said a few days before the opening triumph. "I feel like I've got a pretty good team this year, but those four at this point are our key players."

The young men's squad will undoubtedly deal with peaks and valleys as players become accustomed to college play.

"We had a five-week preseason course and we worked as hard as possible to try to mold the team as best we could," Cumbo said. "I think we did some good work over the summer and we have good potential … The chemistry is good, I imagine it's gonna get better … Hopefully, we don't have to go through growing pains, but with just three returning starters sometimes there's a few bumps in the road."

The Neves family has played a prominent role in Hawks soccer. Marco Neves, Christian's brother, played for Seton Hall after tearing it up for the Hawks with 25 goals and seven assists his sophomore season. He currently is an artist and teacher in New York City after majoring in business.

In Friday's rout of Marin, Griffin LaFleur scored two goals and Christian Neves added a goal and an assist. Collin Miller and Adrian Denoncourt also scored.

The Hawks will play their home opener against Feather River at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 1.

WOMEN'S SOCCER
The Las Positas women (1-0) boast three strong captains in Isabel Mello and Ashley Arno, both midfielders, and defender Danielle Gettler. Freshman forward Danielle Castro is a key newcomer. Freshman goalkeeper Ava Buckles also looks solid.

The Hawks boast a tradition of success. They finished 11-5-3 last season, advancing to the CCCAA playoffs, and 3-4-3 in conference. They were Coast-North champions in 2019-20 at 13-6-4 and 9-0-2, after finishing 13-4-3 and 7-2-2 the previous season.

Even though two-thirds of the current team is new, Cumbo gives the Hawks high marks for overall quality.

"The team's good," Cumbo said. "I think we'll have a little bit more of the ball this year. I think we'll continue to grow as the season goes on."

Freshman midfielder Tiana LaFleur, whose two siblings play on the Las Positas men's team, is another promising newcomer.

The women's team will travel to Cosumes River on Tuesday and play its home opener against Feather River at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 1.
