Hawks open 2022-23 season by hosting Tony Costello Tip-Off Classic

LIVERMORE – The 2022-23 Las Positas College men's basketball season officially gets underway, starting on Thursday with Day 1 of the 16th annual Tony Costello Tip-Off Classic. The Hawks will take on the Simpson University JV squad at 2 p.m. to open the three-day tournament action at The Nest on the campus of Las Positas.

LPC enters the season ranked No. 10 in the California Community College Men's Basketball Coaches Association (CCCMBCA) Northern California Preseason Poll. 

Also competing at the tournament, making their season debuts are Butte College, No. 11 Columbia College, No. 6 Contra Costa College, No. 12 Cosumnes River College, College of the Siskiyous, and No. 20 Los Medanos College.

All games of the tournament are set to be live streamed on the Las Positas College Athletics YouTube channel. The Day 1 schedule and video links are below:

Las Positas is coming off a historic 2021-22 season that saw the Hawks advance to the CCCAA State Championships for the first time. Under head coach James Giacomazzi, the Hawks compiled an all-time program-best 27-4 overall record and went 12-2 in Coast Conference play.

All-State selection Jordahn Johnson returns for the Hawks. The 2021-22 Coast Conference North Division Co-Freshman of the Year and first-team honoree averaged a double-double for LPC with 16.4 points and 11.0 rebounds per game.
