Defensive Focus Results in Tournament Championship

Defensive Focus Results in Tournament Championship

(Box Score)

The Las Positas men's basketball team headed to Sacramento lthis weekend with a key central focus, defense.

Heading into the 39th Annual James Clarf Classic hosted by Cosumnes River, Hawk Nation was giving up 76.1 points per game. For defensive-minded head coach, James Giacomazzi, he knew that in order to compete, not just in the tournament, but also in the tough Coast Conference, the team would have to perform better on defensive side of the ball.

This weekend, they did just that.

Behind a stout defense that only surrendered an avaerage of 67 points over three games this weekend, the Hawks return home as Champions, defeatng Cosumnes River 58-54 behind the efforts of Tournament MVP Peter Hewitt, Double Double Machine Anand Hundal (14 points and 12 rebounds), and the dangerous JT Branch who contributed had 13 points and eight boards.

AFter the game, Coach Giacomazzi shared, "The guys have really worked hard on improving our team defense and it showed this weekend. We had contributions from guys up and down the roster and our team depth also paid dividends in not only tonight's game [against Cosumnes] but also in the game against Sac City.

With the win, the Hawks move to 7-3 on the year and return home for a game Wednesday against Hartnell (5-1).  Tip-off is scheduled for 7 pm at Tony Costello Court on the campus of Las Positas College.
