Two strong teams with dedicated and engaging players. One highly respected head coach guiding both units.

It all adds up to a memorable soccer story at Las Positas College. Both the Hawks' men's and women's teams are headed to the 3C2A Northern California Regional Playoffs this weekend.

The No. 10 Las Positas women (13-3-6) will travel to No. 7 Santa Rosa Junior College (8-6-5) at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

The Las Positas men (13-7-2), seeded 14th, will open at No. 3 West Valley (12-4-2) at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Head coach Andy Cumbo is enjoying a dream season, times two.

"Personally, this is probably a year that I'll remember when my career is all said and done," the coach said.

He earned his landmark 100th win at Las Positas on Sept. 8, and with an overall career record of 299-302-8, he could hit another major landmark of 300 career wins with a victory on Saturday. Imagine that.

"I've been at it for 23 years now and I'm still having fun," Cumbo said, "and I feel good about the work my staff and the teams have put in for our college and the community."

On the women's side, Las Positas enjoyed a highly successful run in conference play capped by wins over De Anza 4-0 and Ohlone 7-0.

Santa Rosa took a 2-0 win over Las Positas on Sept. 22 in nonconference play. The Hawks were 8-1-3 in the top-heavy Coast-North, paced also by CCSF (10-0-2), Skyline (9-1-2), and West Valley (9-2-1).

"The women have had a great year, probably one of the best ever," Cumbo said. "The team is so talented, competitive and team oriented and a real pleasure to work with. This is a squad that has the potential to make some moves in the bracket."

Nadia Barron Santiago, a freshman midfielder, leads the Hawks in total points with 26 (12 goals, 2 assists), and Kimberly Granados had 23 points (9 goals, 5 assists). Sophomore Danielle Castro is next with 20 points (7 goals, 6 a assists). Freshman midfielder Kaitlyn Lemus has 17 points (4 goals, 9 a assists).

On the men's side, the Hawks and West Valley met in the regular season, with West Valley taking a dramatic 2-1 win. West Valley scored in the first minute to take a 1-0 lead, but the Hawks pulled even on a Jayden Nguyen unassisted goal. West Valley scored the winner in the 90th minute.

Saturday's winner will face either Folsom Lake or Hartnell in Round 2.

The young Hawks closed the regular season with five wins in their final six games to surge into the playoffs, outscoring opponents a combined 13-5 over the stretch.

Freshman Stefan Zanatti leads the Hawks in scoring with eight goals and in total points with 20, and sophomore Edwin Zabala (Granada) has six goals and six assists for 18 points. Freshman Eamon Fahkri (Dublin) has 17 points (6 goals, 5 assists).

"This is probably the best men's team I've had here," Cumbo said. "We've had tons of talent and chemistry before, but never the mixture that we do with this squad. The team can play with anyone and they are hungry for more games."
