Kicking It With The Hawks

By Matt Schwab

Men's Soccer

Led on offense by state scoring leader Saul Tecle, the Las Positas men's soccer team has picked up momentum late in the season.

With two games left in the regular season, the Hawks (10-7-3, 4-5-2 Coast-South) are in position to host a playoff game.

Tecle amassed 23 goals in 19 games played, including scoring twice in a hard-fought 3-2 win at Cabrillo on Nov. 5. He erupted for five goals and two assists in an 8-1 rout of visiting Monterey Peninsula on Nov. 1, and Frank Hinostraza scored twice with three assists.

Hawks stalwarts Jayden Nguyen & Monir Gardizi have been a "steady and key fixture for us defensively throughout the whole season," according to head coach Andy Cumbo. Last week, the Hawks were bolstered by the return of two previous starters from injury, Ryan Hoops and Angel Rondon. LPC will travel to Gavilan on Tuesday and Hartnell on Friday to complete the Coast-South season.

Women's Soccer

The improving Las Positas women's soccer team is in position to make the playoffs for the ninth straight season.

"The women's team continues to make progress and with one of the hardest strengths of schedule," LPC head coach Andy Cumbo says.

The Hawks (6-9-3, 2-5-2 Coast-North) boast a steady group of players in Ashley Annis, Kailey Matta, Kendall Cromwell, and Mia Lemus.

"We are looking to follow their leadership as we get closer to the postseason," Cumbo said.

The Hawks will finish the regular season at Gavilan on Tuesday and at De Anza on Thursday. LPC entered the week with a chance to host a playoff game.
